Almost every black belt remembers their first month. It's humbling, exhausting, and confusing in the best way. Here's what the first 90 days usually look like, so nothing catches you off guard.
Weeks 1–4: survival mode
You'll feel lost in live rounds. That's normal. Your only goals are to breathe, protect your neck, and tap early. Your body will be sore in places you didn't know existed.
Come to two or three Fundamentals classes per week.
Ask your partner to go light, because everyone does at first.
Write down one thing you learned after every class.
“Tap early, tap often. Nobody remembers who tapped who in a Tuesday class.”
Weeks 5–8: the positions click
Mount, side control, guard and back. You start to know where you are, even if you can't get out yet. This is when most people decide whether Jiu-Jitsu is for them.
A note on injuries
Most beginner injuries come from ego, not technique. Tap before it hurts, and tell your coach about any old injuries before you train.
Weeks 9–12: your first small wins
You hit your first sweep in live rolling. You escape a mount you used to be stuck under. These moments are small, and they are everything. Around now you'll likely earn your first stripe.
Keep a steady schedule, even when work gets busy.
Try one open mat to roll with new partners.
Book a private lesson to fix your biggest leak.
